The aim of the research is to get insight in workable mechanisms for Public-Private co-operation by analysing the currently used mechanisms for co-operation with a focus on developing countries. The perspective for this research is to see how PPPs (Public Private Partnerships) can contribute to direct (economic) poverty alleviation. This research project with an amount of 200.000 euro from ICCO, to be finalized by December 2007, consists of three stages.
The first stage is a position paper and consisted of two main parts: (a) a conceptual and analytical part that largely set the terms for the remainder of the research project (b) a practical part that aimed at gaining information on the most relevant parties in this problem area and that helped in making the appropriate choices for the next stage of the project.
The second phase of the project aimed at developing a concise, relevant and practical framework for the implementation of effective partnerships in at least two global commodity chains. Next to further research into the specific conditions – and dilemmas - for effective partnerships, this stage focused on developing and testing learning modules in which the participants in partnerships will be helped to improve and learn from the partnership.
The final stage of this project aims at the dissemination of the lessons learned. The aim is to assemble a handbook “Business & Development” that includes both conceptual as well as practical elaborations. The handbook will be complemented by more interactive training modules on (1) analysis of commodity chains (actors, power distribution, existence of trade marks and the like); (2) the actual partnership process (best-worst practices, dilemma’s identification and training, tips for stakeholder dialogues).
